Ain’t Nuttin’ To It But To Do It

Hey there!

How was your weekend?! I hear the Bite of Seattle was on fire this year. I know I had myself a great time last year, but this past weekend there was only one thing on my mind, IKEA. My buddy Bethany and I journeyed to the fair land of Renton, Washington. Visited foreign Starbucks. Ate meatballs. Deelish! I got so many good treats!

But if you thought IKEA on a Saturday was tiresome enough, no, no, you were wrong. After a daring moment of strapping this giant Mona Lisa on the roof of the car, we made our way back home to drop stuff off, then went to Home Depot for flowers and supplies. And THEN went to Fred Meyer for groceries! I was exhausted by the end but I love being stocked up on all sorts of stuff for all sorts of projects to share with you!

One Step at a Time, wherein I aim to spruce up outdoor spaces in order to better enjoy them in all this sunshine…that is if/when I ever actually just sit down. The photo above illustrates what that might look like.

Routine Maintenance, I may have mentioned that I’m a list person. I mean, I don’t need to tell you–in the middle of a list–that I love lists. You know me! But there are all sorts of things that don’t fit on the average to do list that are important for health and happiness. I want to get serious with myself and figure out the best plan to keep up.

That Fabulous Table, my buddy Ryan gave me this incredible round coffee table he inherited from his grandma that is in need of a little TLC. Back when I refinished my dresser I was gearing up for this table–this table was my goal, but I got scared because all the little fittings and hinges are precious and what if I ruin it?! Well, bottom line is I ain’t no punk! I’m going to stain it black and I’m gonna name it Sirius and it will be the best thing that ever happened. You just wait!

After that, well, I may just have a BIG GINORMOUS SURPRISE.

Or not.

You didn’t hear it from me. 😉

What are you up to this week? Looks like the sun’s gonna shine. Perfect time to be productive little busy bees!

Things don’t necessarily work out the way we plan. As it turns out we didn’t get to jam the other night. One of our jammers ended up admitted to the hospital after experiencing some blindness and pain. An MRI revealed that there may be something. That’s all I know. Our hearts dropped, Honeybee’s and mine. We couldn’t do anything or say anything, really. We just sat in silence, sending our love.

Update! It was scar tissue, not a tumor. Phew, but also, gasp. More prayers and more love just to be sure. ❤

No jam left me with extra time to make my hardware store list extra thorough. I had to do something to keep from being sad [without just cause]. So, with any luck, I’ll be:

Staining My Dresser

Why? Because all these damn wood tones in this room are making me feel like I’m in a bad lodge. Also, because [back at the Burrow] a neighborhood cat, T, peed on it. Gross. Also-also because the fixtures are breaking apart and weren’t very comfortable in the first place.

Painting My Nightstand

Why, well that wood tone thing I mentioned before, but this one especially because it’s a blonde wood tone. Bleh. I’ve seen an IKEA hack on this very piece. They went for white. I don’t know if that would work for me, but I also don’t have another particular color in mind. This is my wild card project.

Staining  That Amazing Round Antique Table

Okay, I’ll admit if any one project gets out of my reach, it’ll be this one. I want to practice my staining skills on the dresser before I take on anything so lovely as this one. I’m also unsure about stain colors. I’m hoping the hardware store will woo me. Especially one of these gel stains I’ve been itching to try. We shall see.

Sketches for a New Series

Yup. Can’t wait!

Happy weekend, y’all!

Has It Been Three Years Already?

Hey, guess what! This past week I celebrated my third Seattleversary [specifically October, 13th]! I remember it like it was yesterday. I went to Old Navy and bought a grey and black plaid pea coat, boarded a plane with a one-way ticket and [several hours later] Butterfly picked me up from the airport. [Yeah, that pea coat was useless. They don’t sell real coats in Florida. Why would they? You don’t need them there!] I remember arriving at my new home, a sleazy motel on Aurora, and seeing the carpet stains, thought the worst. I cried myself to sleep that night, only to be woken up by an actual pimp slapping his actual hooker around outside my window. Still, Seattle charmed my pants off. I would make an almost daily trip to the Fremont Library and count all the flowers I encountered on the way. The leaves were bright yellow and red and orange.  The kind of leaves that make you feel like you’re in some kind of wonderland.

I’ve loved Seattle a little bit more everyday, all the while missing Florida and Tennessee and familiar faces. I’m constantly encountering doppelgängers of Florida friends. Even though they’re different people on the opposite side of the country, they make me feel right at home.

Looking back I know I did the right thing, but at the time [especially in certain moments] moving across the country with no job was a shocking thing to consider. At one point a relative cornered me and promised that all the worst things would happen to me and that assured me that my actions were killing my mother. But actually some of the best things have happened, and Mama Sunshine is just fine.

To celebrate three years of ass-kickery, I’ve decided to share my life list. I’m a list maker naturally, but I was directly inspired by Nicole at Making it Lovely [her blog is dope, read it]. Anything major I’ve ever accomplished has come from a list that I may have jotted down on some scrap. Whether or not I maintained it, checked it twice, I need to write things out for the sake of my sanity. From there I break goals down into individual tasks and get them done. Some of these may not ever get crossed off, that’s okay, what’s important is that at every turn adventure unfolds.

So, here’s a list of adventures I’d like to have. You can also revisit the list at its new home, tabbed across the top of the Press! I’ll keep it updated and add photos/links as things are accomplished!
